Does the 3000 come with a firewire cable? If not, does it just use a normal 6-pin connector?

Firewire driver problem

$

I just got back from Austin with my new F3k! I've got a problem, and I found somebody with a F5k with the same problem but I've tried the steps in the forum (and release notes) several times with the same results.

When I look in Device Manager it shows the Flex 3000 but the device has an exclamation point on it, when I double click the device it says the driver isn't installed. I've tried 2.1.5 and 2.0.22 with the same results.

When I power up the 3000 my computer makes the noise like it found the device and the Firewire card properties say it's working correctly. Under add/remove programs I have PSDR and the driver both listed. I've tried rebooting.

What am I missing? I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium. Part of the problem may be that I ran a Flex 1500 on this computer until a few weeks ago, I uninstalled it but when I installed the new version it's still giving me the option of the 1500 in the chooser so it's still got remnants of the old installation somewhere. I don't see a Flex directory after I do the uninstall so it must put it somewhere else. I didn't think it would matter since the 1500 uses USB instead of firewire.

Anybody got any ideas?

Tnx,

Update: I forgot to mention, the first time I installed it I got the message at the bottom of the screen that it was installing the drivers, after a minute or so it said it failed. On subsequent attempts I haven't gotten that message at all but it comes back in device mgr and in the uninstall programs box. I just tried it again with 2.1.5, when I click the FlexRadio driver icon it says "no devices found".

Flex 3000 Noise.

Hello everyone,

I have perused the "Subjects" and without reading every one I have not found a related subject title, what I would like to ask is what level of noise do others get (attempting to ascertain if mine is normal).

My "S Meter" is showing S3 on 6m without any antenna plugged in, just on a dummy load.
The 3k Panadapter is displaying -110 dBm of white noise.
Also as a guide it shows -113dBm on 40m the best band is 10m with -133dBm.

I am using a linear type PSU.

Having been historically (42yrs on the air) involved with "Normal" HF transceivers which show S0 on their S meters with dummy load plugged into the Ant socket this does not look OK to me.

Your comments would be appreciated.

CW Zero Beat button question

$

I'm running PSDR 2.1.5 and have noticed something strange (to me, anyway) when I click the 0 Beat button. I can be tuned to a CW signal, click the zero beat button and it centers the signal in the passband. If I click it again, it changes. If I keep clicking the button the tone changes a little every time I click it. How can I tell when I'm really zero beat with the guy if it moves around when I click the button?

It doesn't move very far, probably not enough to matter to the guy on the other end, but it seems to be when I'm zero beat and click the button again it should stay in the same place. I don't remember if this happened or not with 2.0.22 or with my 1500, I'm using a 3000 now. Not a big deal, just not the behavior I expected.

Flex 3000 and VAC

Hi to all,
my first posting on here so please take this into account :-)). Recently qualified here in England as M6AQL i have taken the plunge and this week bought a Flex 3000 and a Flex 1500. I have installed and set up as per instructions and have read pages of info and watched the various videos available but so far using VAC i am unable to get audio from the pc or send audio via the radio with VAC enabled. Am i doing something wrong here or is it not possible.? The flex 3000 is connected to a home built intel Core 2 Quad 6800 with 4gb ram 60gb SSD H/d and two 500gb Sata h/drives running Win 7 ultimate and the Flex 1500 to a Samsung n150 550 netbook 2 gb ram and win 7 starter. Any help on getting these to talk toegether would be greatly appreciated.

Blower Noise reducing

Hi,

is it possible to reduce Blowers noise?

It is not very comfortable sitting beside the SDR with such a noisy blower.

So wonder if the blower could be switched off during receive or at least reducing the speed in order to reduce the noise.

Any ideas ?

Flex 3000 Purchase ?

I hope I don't offend any Flex owners as I am not trying too.

I recently have been really messed over by Yaesu with an FT-2000 I bought new back in Feb 2011 long story but there is a bad design flaw and RFI with them blowing preamps twice within 1 months time. Several owners have had it happen repeatedly as well so time to get something else.

Once fixed and sold I am going to replace it with either a Flex or Elkcraft, as I will never again own anything from Yaesu.

I am really stuck in a decision between the two choices so I was hoping to hear from a few owners with their experiences with the Flex mainly the 3000 as I am thinking I should be able to recover about the price for one when I sell the ft-2000.

Below is a list of Modes I like to operate will these work and have there been any problems with them and the Flex 30000:

PSK31-RTTY-SSTV- and most all the digital modes that are in HRD DM780 (BTW I will be using the HRD suite as I have in the past and know it well so take HRD into account as being the software used for these modes and logbook as well)

Easy-pal- Digital STV

JT65-HF (Using the Joe Large JT65-HF software)

WSPR- Whisperer using the WSPR by K1JT

WSJT9 - various modes with the WSJT9 suite again by K1JT

Also of course the Phone and CW modes.

Computer system should be more than capable of running the PowerSDR software and HRD or PowerSDR and one of the other mentioned above programs I think.

It is a home built system (building servers and workstations is one of my Jobs)
The system is as follows:

Core Deneb Processor Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition 3.6GHz
Number of Cores: Quad-Core
Level 1 Cache: 128KB (per core)
Level 2 Cache: 512KB (per core)
Level 3 Cache: 6MB
4 GB of DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666)
MSI Motherboard 880G-E45 Socket AM3 880G ATX AMD Motherboard
Video card H645H1G AMD Radeon HD 6450 1024MB DDR3
Sata II 72000 RPM drives (2X500 GB)
750 Watt supply
Windows 7 Professional 32Bit

Hopefully the above should work well?

The motherboard does have a 400Gbps Fire wire controller on it, I have never used it so I am not sure it is decent (I know I need a good Fire-wire controller) if need be I will pick up a TI chip set PCI-e express card. The on board fire wire is based on the VIA® VT6315N chip set and I am not sure if anyone has used it successfully with the Flex 3000?

I am looking for comments on how you like the receiver of the flex 3000 how is the noise?

Speaking of noise a few have commented on Noisy fans in the unit is this still the case?

What Microphone(s) seem to work well with it besides a Yaesu microphone and I won't as mentioned above have anything made by them in my shack.

Heil’s are nice (but pricey) I do have a couple Audio Technicia performer vocal microphones (ATR-30) and a United UM-800 microphone as well, no problem here with making a rj45 connecter for one of them. Has anyone had experience with using either of these?

Is anyone having problems with FRI getting back into externally amplified speakers?

What external reasonable priced powered speakers have been found to work well?

What don't you like about the Flex- Besides missing buttons and knobs those are a given and personally I use a mouse and keyboard all day, and have thought about a touch screen monitor in the future.

What have you found to be a big benefit going with a full SDR transceiver

So there you have it Flexers - sell me on why I should chose the Flex (3000) over a K3

Thanks and hope to be back on the HF air very soon.

PSDR 2.2 Display issues with XP

I have an XP SP3 based computer with a Flex 3000. With any version of PSDR 2.x my display is not correct. It is hard to explain but it shows up as a ghost image. For instance on the start up the bannr page shows up with one and half of the banner pages displayed. The operating screen is all misaligned.

Not much info but I am hoping someone has seen this problem before.

Ideas for Power SDR improvements

Bonjour from Bordeaux, France,
Just ideas to improve the use of the Power SDR flex3000.
- Preseted split value : With a value we can chose in the menu
- memory for each band and sub band : Very usefull, with that no problem to restore the transmit frequency from an other band !
- have the mouse fixed with some parameter selected as TUNE. A security as you're tuning the linear amplifier, having problem, obliged to find the right mouse position to tune the power off !
- If we have split, VFO Sync keeps the split value while frequency change
- Be able to use WoodBboxRadio Tmate directly. I'm sur many guy having a Tmate should appreciate to have it installed directly inside as flex control

Flex-3000 Power Relay Not Engaging

$

I'm wondering if anybody out there has experienced this problem. When I turn on my Flex-3000 I no longer hear the power relay engage and the computer no longer recognizes the radio. It work the night before when I shut everything down, but now it doesn't work. Nothing has changed since the previous night's use. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. I've been using my set up since June with no problems.

Has anybody else out there had this problem?

Thanks,

Can I use HRD with Flex 3000

Wanting to move from my Yaesu ft-1000mp Mark-V - however my log is in HRD and I use the DX cluster that when selecting a station it changes radio to the freq. Everything is working good and I will be giving up the 200 watt for 100. Just like the Flex but would like to intergate HRD if possible. Would you guys comment on by set up/

Help improving voice signal quality on TX

$

OK, please bear with me, a totally new ham - just got my call sign today. The Flex 3000 is my first radio and, although I am a longtime computer nut, all this is very new to me.

I got the nerve to answer my first CQ this evening. I could hear the caller perfectly. He said I had a strong signal, but he had trouble understanding me. He was very patient and tried to guide me in making some adjustments (he was a Flex-5000A owner!), but like an idiot, I hit the wrong key and lost the frequency and could not reestablish the contact.

I am using a Heil PR-40 microphone with a USB interface and VAC enabled with Windows Direct Sound driver. I have adjusted the MIC gain so that it peaks at ~0dB. When I enable MON so that TX audio can be heard through my headphones, my voice sounds perfectly fine to me.

So I'm wondering if the problems this evening were related to propagation/antenna issues or whether I am doing something wrong on my end. I am particularly fuzzy on what settings I should be using for AGC, Drive, Preamp, etc. Is there someone here willing to listen to my signal and help me figure this out? Advice greatly appreciated.

Flex demo mode - live recording available?

Hi Folks,

I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a Flex 3000.

I've just downloaded Power SDR (latest version) and launched it in Demo mode.

I ubderstand that the Flex Radio can record a complete 96khz band of data for later playback.

Is it possible to have the demo play such a sample ?

Thanks,

Ray

Flex-3000 ATU fails to tune

$

I have a Flex-3000 that was working perfectly yesterday. I made a few RTTY
contacts using the Flex-3000 and DM780 during the WW RTTY contest

Today when I tried to do some PSK31, the ATU failed to tune the antenna and went
into bypass.

I reset the Flex-3000 back to factory defaults. I reconfigured the Flex back to
my normal settings and tried tuning into the antenna and also tried to tune into a
dummy load and the ATU still fails to tune.

I don't hear the normal relays clicking as the tuner is working when I click the Tune button.
I would think it would try to tune into the dummy load and then just go into the bypass
mode since the SWR on the dummy load is so low. But the tuner runs for a minute or so
and then says it failed to tune just like it does when connected to my Titan-DX vertical.

I connected the Titan-DX to my IC-7000 with a IT-100 antenna tuner and the IC-7000
is able to tune properly. I made a couple of SSB contacts on 12 meters and 40 meters
with no problems so the Titan-DX antenna seems fine.

Since the Flex fails to tune with the antenna ( GAP Titan-DX vertical) or a dummy
load, does it mean something in the Flex has failed?

Simple use of the Flex3000?

$

I have been lurking here and other Flex boards. Although I have learned a lot about the capabilities of the 3000, I am amazed at the complex operations some operators do. All kinds of specialized programs, virtual com ports, point and shoot - and so much more.

This begs the question: Does anyone simply use the 3000 as a simple XCVR that just happens to have excellent technical capabilities for filtering and DSP - and, a great band scope display? All I want is superb reliability for my daily SSB/CW rag chews and occasional DX. Am I looking at something far too complex for such mundane tasks? Anyone using a 3000 for simple duties?

I am pretty much down to either the Flex or a K3. Dollar wise, the Flex wins hands-down. But, cost is not all that important when you make a purchase that will be used for many years.

Thanks,

Bill W2BLC
