I hope I don't offend any Flex owners as I am not trying too.
I recently have been really messed over by Yaesu with an FT-2000 I bought new back in Feb 2011 long story but there is a bad design flaw and RFI with them blowing preamps twice within 1 months time. Several owners have had it happen repeatedly as well so time to get something else.
Once fixed and sold I am going to replace it with either a Flex or Elkcraft, as I will never again own anything from Yaesu.
I am really stuck in a decision between the two choices so I was hoping to hear from a few owners with their experiences with the Flex mainly the 3000 as I am thinking I should be able to recover about the price for one when I sell the ft-2000.
Below is a list of Modes I like to operate will these work and have there been any problems with them and the Flex 30000:
PSK31-RTTY-SSTV- and most all the digital modes that are in HRD DM780 (BTW I will be using the HRD suite as I have in the past and know it well so take HRD into account as being the software used for these modes and logbook as well)
Easy-pal- Digital STV
JT65-HF (Using the Joe Large JT65-HF software)
WSPR- Whisperer using the WSPR by K1JT
WSJT9 - various modes with the WSJT9 suite again by K1JT
Also of course the Phone and CW modes.
Computer system should be more than capable of running the PowerSDR software and HRD or PowerSDR and one of the other mentioned above programs I think.
It is a home built system (building servers and workstations is one of my Jobs)
The system is as follows:
Core Deneb Processor Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition 3.6GHz
Number of Cores: Quad-Core
Level 1 Cache: 128KB (per core)
Level 2 Cache: 512KB (per core)
Level 3 Cache: 6MB
4 GB of DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666)
MSI Motherboard 880G-E45 Socket AM3 880G ATX AMD Motherboard
Video card H645H1G AMD Radeon HD 6450 1024MB DDR3
Sata II 72000 RPM drives (2X500 GB)
750 Watt supply
Windows 7 Professional 32Bit
Hopefully the above should work well?
The motherboard does have a 400Gbps Fire wire controller on it, I have never used it so I am not sure it is decent (I know I need a good Fire-wire controller) if need be I will pick up a TI chip set PCI-e express card. The on board fire wire is based on the VIA® VT6315N chip set and I am not sure if anyone has used it successfully with the Flex 3000?
I am looking for comments on how you like the receiver of the flex 3000 how is the noise?
Speaking of noise a few have commented on Noisy fans in the unit is this still the case?
What Microphone(s) seem to work well with it besides a Yaesu microphone and I won't as mentioned above have anything made by them in my shack.
Heil’s are nice (but pricey) I do have a couple Audio Technicia performer vocal microphones (ATR-30) and a United UM-800 microphone as well, no problem here with making a rj45 connecter for one of them. Has anyone had experience with using either of these?
Is anyone having problems with FRI getting back into externally amplified speakers?
What external reasonable priced powered speakers have been found to work well?
What don't you like about the Flex- Besides missing buttons and knobs those are a given and personally I use a mouse and keyboard all day, and have thought about a touch screen monitor in the future.
What have you found to be a big benefit going with a full SDR transceiver
So there you have it Flexers - sell me on why I should chose the Flex (3000) over a K3
Thanks and hope to be back on the HF air very soon.
